Cabinet of Curiosity
Greed Monster
Artist Statement
As you look inside this sculpture molded from the idea of a cabinet of curiosity based on a chapter in a book called "To Have and to Hold." In my chapter it was discussed how there were these men in the late 1800s that were utterly infatuated with books, they were referred to as bibliomaniacs. The first artifact I designed is a golden brain filled with books, which referred to the knowledge and infatuation some men in this chapter had for books and less of a hoarding and unhealthy obsession. On the other hand, there were some men that had a life consuming obsession with books and wanted to own the only copy of of certain scriptures if not every single written word in the world to the point where it quite literally drove some to kill or lose everything. This ties into my second artifact the "Greed Monster." Lastly, the cabinet itself I designed is a loose replica of the Tower of Babel briefly mentioned in the chapter when a room inside became a giant library for any and almost all books for the public to read. The top and bottom tier were also carefully thought out to give the viewer a sense of morality with in this chapter.
